Flats fishing: bonefish, permit and the tide window
On the flats, the conditions that make fish comfortable and the conditions that let you see them are not the same. You need both.
Flats fishing is the one place where the normal logic of this site turns upside down. For every other species, low light helps. On a flat, you are hunting fish you have to see first, in a foot of water, and low light makes that impossible. The bonefish model therefore has an inverted light term that peaks at solar noon under a clear sky, on weights of 40% tide, 22% wind, 18% pressure, 12% moon, 8% light.
Tide: the flat has to have water on it
This is not a preference, it is a precondition. A flat that is dry is not fishable, and a flat with six feet over it is no longer a flat. The productive window is when water is moving across it.
- The flood. Fish push onto the flat with the incoming water, working the advancing edge for crabs and shrimp the tide is stirring up. Often the best hours of the day.
- The drop. Fish stage at the edges and in channels as water drains off, picking off whatever the outflow carries. More predictable in location, harder to approach.
- Slack high. Usually the weakest window — fish scatter across a flat that is now uniformly deep enough everywhere.
Spring tides around a new or full moon flood the flat further and drain it harder. That opens up back-country water that is dry on a neap, and it also means the window is shorter and sharper. Neap tides can leave some flats without enough water to bother.
Light: you cannot cast at what you cannot see
Sun high and behind you, sky clear, good polarised glasses — that is the whole game. Under a heavy overcast, a flat that holds plenty of fish becomes a grey blank sheet, and you are reduced to blind casting at nothing.
Practical ordering:
- Clear sky, sun overhead, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — the money hours.
- Scattered cloud — workable, and you learn to fish the moving patches of sun.
- Solid overcast — very hard. Some anglers do well feeling out nervous water and pushes, but the hit rate drops sharply.
- Early and late — low sun angle plus glare. Fish may be there; you will not see them.
Wind: a narrow band
Flats fishing has the least wind tolerance of anything in this model — the preferred band is a mere 5–16 mph, and both ends of it matter.
- Too calm (under 4 mph). Mirror-flat water. Fish spook at the shadow of a fly line, a poling noise, a bad first cast. Everything must be perfect.
- Just right (8–14 mph). Enough ripple to cover your approach, not so much that you lose visibility. A light chop is a friend.
- Too much (over 18 mph). Surface texture destroys visibility, the poling platform becomes a wrestling match, and accurate casting to a moving fish at 50 feet stops being realistic.
Pressure and temperature
Pressure earns 18% — the standard pre-frontal advantage applies, but on tropical flats the weather is often stable for long stretches and the input carries less week-to-week variation than it does up north.
Temperature matters more than the model can show. Bonefish are genuinely cold-sensitive: a winter cold front that drops water temperature below roughly 70 °F will push fish off the flats into deeper channels for days, and a hard enough front can empty an area entirely. Where sea surface temperature is available it is shown in the stat strip — on a flats trip it is worth more attention than the score.
Timing a flats day
Work backwards. Find the tide stage that floods your flat. Check whether that stage lands inside the high-sun window on any of the next seven days. If flood tide falls at 6 a.m. all week, you are fishing the drop instead — or fishing somewhere else. On the flats, tide and sun have to agree, and when they do the whole trip comes together in about three hours.
